The Native American Pow Wow was held at the fairgrounds in Gaston on Saturday and Sunday (July 21-22). We got there around noon, unloaded, put up the tent and then jumped back in the car to go find somewhere to eat. We ended up in Matthews, Indiana at a nice little cafe. After lunch, we headed back to the Pow Wow where they were just starting the opening ceremonies.
The Native American gear was awesome. Beads, feathers, war paint, leatherwear and moccasins everywhere. The opening ceremonies lasted about an hour and then they really danced. The took a break from 4:30pm-7pm, that’s when we headed back to our campsite and fixed our “hobo” dinners (meat and veggies in tin foil and placed on hot coals to cook).
After dinner, we headed back up to the arena where most of us trolled around the vendors tents and bought goodies. I got a leather pouch and some incense rocks plus a magnet toy. My son got a turtle necklace.
Once darkness fell, we went to an auction in one of the buildings. Steve, our Scoutmaster couldn’t resist some very cool items like a hickory bow, a bone knife, a throwing hawk and some other stuff. Plus, it went really cheap. I picked up a cute dream catcher for my daughter and a carved-stone fox for myself.
We got back to the tents around 1am and slept until 9am Sunday. We got up, had some doughnuts, took down the tents and were pretty much ready to go. But, before we left, we helped the tribe out watching over the “spirit” fire until noon.
All-in-all, a very nice camp out and a cool place to do it at
